Rebecca Stenn has been a dancer as long as she can remember.
She was born in Ohio and spent her childhood in London, Ontario, Canada
studying with Deanne Shorten. Rebecca's love of music comes from her years
at the Interlochen Arts Academy and later the Juilliard School, where she
earned a B.F.A. in dance.
As a member of Momix Dance Theatre from 1989 to 1995 Rebecca toured extensively
throughout Europe, the Far East, South America, the U.S. and Canada and
appeared as a featured performer in films for Italian, Spansih and French
television. Rebecca assisted in the choreography and performed in the Emmy
Award winning film' Pictures at an Exhibition', a PBS, Dance in America
Special, and she also appears in the newly released 3D IMAX film 'Imagine'.
She has collaborated with Moses Pendelton in the making of 'Passion', a
full length work to the music of Peter Gabriel, and assisted him in the
choreography of Lina Wertmuller's 'Carmen' at the Munich State Opera, also
performing as a principal dancer.
Improvisation has always been a strong force in the creation of her work
and in 1990 Rebecca established the first improvisational dance group for
Lincoln Center Institute, which toured throughout New York City schools.
Rebecca has held residencies and taught at numerous festivals and universities
throughout the world. In 1994, she was artist-in-residence at the University
of Western Ontario's dance department, and there created the full length
piece, 'Bones', to critical acclaim. She recently choreographed the U.S.
premiere of the Opera 'Leap Over the Shadow' at the Lotte Lehman Theatre
in Santa Barbara, California, of which David Rubens of the Santa Barbara
Independent wrote,"Stenn's choreography is breathtaking...right on
the money."
Rebecca freelances in New York City with Diamond Dance and Karla Wolfangle
Dance and has performed in the workshop for the upcoming Broadway musical
'Limelight'. She has choreographed several videos for the perfume company
Creations Aromatique and recently choreographed and performed as solo dancer
in Jaron Lanier's upcoming PBS special 'Musork - Postcards From New York.'
In 1996 she has been commissioned with Lanier to choreograph a new piece
for the Copenhagen Festival, is choreographing and starring in the Off-Broadway
production of "The Wild Party" with the Juggernaut Theatre Company
and will be artist-in-residence at Stockton College. She is a freelance
writer for Dancemagazine and the International Journal of Dance.
Kevin Connelly of the New Yorker writes, "Rebecca Stenn has lyrical
precision, athleticism and speed." and Joseph Mazo of the Village Voice
says, "Stenn is a fine dancer - notably strong and precise. Humor and
rhythmic energy give her work a life of its own."
